BEIJING — The Beijing subway opens new stations on Line 11, Line 16, and Line 17 this morning. The newly opened phases increase the total operating distance to 836 km (519 miles), surpassing the Shanghai Metro (825 km/513 miles) to become the longest subway system in Greater China. The opening of 13 stations includes the north phase of Line 17, the final phase of Line 16, and Moshikou Station on Line 11.
The north phase of Line 17 includes 10 stations, from Future Science City North to Workers’ Stadium. Nine of the stations opened today while Wangjing West Station remains closed due to construction. The four stations in the middle phase are still under construction. Therefore passengers will not be able to interchange for Lines 13&15 at Wangjing West Station or travel from the north phase of Line 17 to the south phase of Line 17 directly.
Wanpingcheng and Hongtaizhuang are the two stations on the Final phase of Line 16. They are opened today with SuzhouJie station, the interchange Station with Line 10 that was not open with the previous phase. The opening of these stations makes Line 16 a fully operational service from Bei’anhe To Wanpingcheng. After this opening, the total travel time between terminals will be 83 minutes. Both Lines 16 and 17 are operated by BJMTR.
Moshikou Station is the final station to open on the western section(phase 1) of Line 11, as known as the Winter Olympic branch. It is the only station opened today operated by Beijing Subway, the city-owned company. The EIA document that includes Phase 2 of Line 11 was published in July 2022.
BJMTR is a joint-venture company by MTR, Beijing Capital Group, and the Beijing Infrastructure Investment Co. BJMTR currently operates Line 4, Line 16, Line 17, and Daxing Line.
